Toshiba customer service will not help with software issues at all - even if the software they loaded seems to be faulty.The laptop itself is a fun little thing, easy to use and quite sturdy. Ok this review may be totally off and perhaps i should be reviewing vista instead but I have had this laptop for nearly two years now and have been royally ticked off with it since day one.I have spent over 20 hours with microsoft techs trying to figure out what makes it fail to update windows, fail to download security patches, etc to no avail. I even bought the hardcopy of vista (since I didn't get a hard copy with the laptop) to see if reloading vista would help. I haul it all over the place and it has done ok. I don't think it was an act of brilliance to put the charging socket right next to the disc drive since it makes it hard to open the disc drawer.The screen size is large enough for me and the keys and mouse have held up well to the abuse of cookie crumbs and sticky toddler fingers.So, if this had XP on it I'd probably give it 5 stars but the software has been a massive disappointment as has been the lack of help from Toshiba.
i mean't to post this long ago, but anyway, have had this laptop over a year and has done everything i asked of it - was turned on to the toshiba brand by a friend in the computer repair business who gave it his highest grade - adding memory for vista took away any complaints i might have had. will purchase this brand again.
Pros: Reasonable price; bright, sharp display; 4 USB ports; accepts all the common memory cards; nicely sized, functional keyboard; power brick is smaller than average.Cons: Heavy; only came with 1GB of memory (but easily upgradeable to 2GB by user for around $40); built-in speakers are crappy.
I would recommend it to persons doing research and teaching. This is an incredible piece of equipment. It is very very versatile, reliable and economically priced. It also has the capacity to provide good entertainment. It makes a good companion and good buying choice for starters.

NEVER buy a Toshiba laptop."clerk: "With the ammount of them that we ship back every month, I never would.".just in case you were wondering how many exactly the UPS receives from customer and ships out for repair every month - ".about 30" is the answer I gotGood luck.
